United Nations – My obeservations

I was very contented during the last lecture of current affairs because the topic of the last class was all about United Nations. It is one of the most notable topic of current affairs at present time. If we look into daily news through the newspaper or media there must be a topic on united nation. Actually it has covered a wide range of current affairs. I am very appreciate today because now I am writing a reflective dairy on united nation. After the First World War, people felt the necessity of an international organization that can maintain global peace. Thus, the League of Nations was the outcome of that feeling, after the 1st Great War. But it was found that nations were not willing to this on that time. It was thought that Germany and a financially powerful Japan would be an effective check on Russia. But the result of this selfish policy was the Second World War. At the close of this Second calamity within twenty years, the minds of men again turned to suggesting a more effective world organization, to establish peace on the basis of mutual understanding and toleration. This organization was planned at a Conference of Nations held at Dumbarton.

United nation is an international organization formed in 1945 to increase political and economic cooperation among member countries. The organization works on economic and social development programs, improving human rights and reducing global conflicts. The aims of the United Nations is to maintain international peace and security and develop friendly relations among nations.

Since it is an international organization it has six official languages Arabic, Chinese, English, France, and Russian and Spanish the working languages at the UN Secretariat are English and French. A representative may speak in any of the official languages, and the speech is interpreted simultaneously into the other official languages. Most UN documents are also issued in all six official languages. At the same time a representative may choose to make a statement using a non-official language. In such cases, the delegation must provide either an interpretation or a written text of the statement in one of the official languages.

The most important part of UN is its security council in which the sponsoring nations have permanent seats, the others are non-permanent and elected for two years. The main purpose of UN security council is to ensure public welfare and for this it has several subsidiary bodies, among which the more important are the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the International Labor Organization (ILO), as also the Atomic Commission.

Funding for the United Nations comes from two sources: assessed and voluntary contributions. Assessed contributions are payments made as part of the obligations that nations undertake when signing agreements based on each country’s ability to pay. Voluntary contributions are preference of each individual member state. These contributions nearly half of all UN funding, most of the contributions are funded for charitable relief and development agencies, including the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Program (WFP), the UN Development Program (UNDP), and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

The General Assembly occupies a central position as the chief planned, policy making and representative body part of the United Nations. It provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full measure of international issues covered by the Charter. It also plays a significant role in the process of standard-setting and the codification of international law. The Assembly meets in regular session intensively from September to December each year, and thereafter as required.

Most of all, the united nation is a great organization which has been working hard for last few decades to make sure that there is a peace on the earth. But if we look into Afghanistan Iraq, Syria, of course we can say that many times it has failed to keep peace but in many occasion it has taken step into a nation and solved its problem because they were not capable of doing it themselves. Although it is not easy task to maintain peace all over the world because different nations have different cultures, viewpoints but UN has been trying for long time so that we can live in the world peacefully.
