United Nations

UN and the work of UN in your country: The name “United Nations”, developed by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During Second World War there were 26 nations decided fighting against war. Before the name was League of Nations, an organization conceived in similar circumstances during the First World War, and established in 1919. But League of Nations reorganized when it failed to prevent the Second World War so now its name after United Nations.

The United Nations’ system is based on five principal organs: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Secretariat, and the International Court of Justice.it has six official language and Arabic is one of them.

The General Assembly is the main organ of meeting all nations because it is consist of all United Nations members’ states. This assembly meet in regular yearly sessions under the president and all members have the opportunity to address the assembly. When the general assembly votes on important questions the one third of the nations should support that otherwise it will not be a law. The questions included by peace and security issue, election of the members to organs and budgetary matters. All other questions are decided by majority vote. Each member country has one vote.

The Security Council is organized for maintaining peace and security among countries. The other organs of the United Nations can only have the power to ‘recommend’ to member governments but the Security Council has the power to make decisions to actions. The Security Council is made up of 15 member states, consisting of 5 permanent members–China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States–and 10 non-permanent members, currently Azerbaijan, India, South Africa, Colombia, Morocco, Togo, Germany, Pakistan, Guatemala, and Portugal. The five permanent members have veto power which means they can modify any decisions of United Nations. The ten temporary seats are for two-year terms.

Now let’s talk about the contribution of UN in Bangladesh. So the main sides which I would like to mention that is UN certified Bangladesh by giving membership after getting independence which helped Bangladesh to be recognised by other nations all over the world. Moreover in peace UN keeping mission lot of Bangladeshi army and succeeded to build peace, especially in African countries although there is lot of criticism on UN peace making and building as well.
