The structure of the United Nations is based around its charter which consists of 111 articles. These articles explain how the United Nations works. There are six parts of UN according to its charter: General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Trusteeship Council, International Court of Justice and Secretariat.
Firstly, the General Assembly consists of representative from all the countries and it is main task is to discuss and decides on issues of international peace and security. The Security Council is the five permanent countries which are US, USSR, GB, Chine and France and also the six temporary countries who are elected periodically. The Economic and Social Council aims to promote and improve the economic and social well-being of those living in the member states. This part deals with human rights and hopes to create a world which is free of diseases and hungry. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the main judicial body of the United Nations. All members of the United Nations are party to the International Court. Lastly, the Secretariat is the body that runs all the activities of the UN and it is appointed by the General Assembly.
UN struggles to solve the world problems from international terrorism to climate change, and without doubt it has achieved a great reputation in doing such things. Achievements of UN are many and we cannot deny, although many argue that UN would have done more. Starting from 1996, UN deployed 42 peace keeping forces which were able to restore peace and tranquility in many areas saving millions of people from conflicts. There are presently 16 active peace keeping forces in operation from east to west of the globe.
In addition to this, more than 30 million refugees fleeing war, famine and persecution have received aid from UN refugee agency. Furthermore, the WHO which works under UN achieved to eradicate smallpox after 13 years of effort. These are few examples to mention and I would not forget how much UN helped my country in 2009 when East Africa suffered one of the most long term and devastating droughts in the region.
In conclusion, UN is one of the most important organizations that exists and contributes to human well-being. It has achieved a lot to reduce the sufferings from millions of people and it none sense to blame it. I will conclude Omar Faruq, the Deputy Vice Chancellor’s statement that the globe would be much worse than this without the UN.
