Reflective Diary:Fast Food by Ismail Hossen

I used to go to the restaurant very often for taking food with my friends when I was in my country. The last time I went to the restaurant about four months before with my cousin in KL. The time was evening. We saw many people there as well who were taking their food and were chattering. However, I came to know various aspects about the fast food restaurants by going to the restaurant like KFC, Macdolland. Not only has the owner of the restaurants but also many others such as the government, many advertisements companies, farmers who serves the good for preparing food are also involved with maintain it. The owners get the main profit where the farmers are paid very small money. The government are involved with it by taking tax and giving them security.

The term fast food was found in a dictionary by Merriam–Webster in 1951. The word given to food that can be prepared and served very quickly is called fast food.  Although any meal with low preparation time can be considered to be fast food, typically the term refers to food sold in a restaurant or store with preheated or precooked ingredients, and served to the customer in a packaged form for taking out. In the past people used to eat healthy, freshly prepared food with their families in the home. But today, many people particularly young people prefer to eat fast food such as hamburgers, fried chicken, shawarma, or pizza. There are many reasons behind this change. However, fast-food also has some serious effects on individuals and society.

Because of many motives it is going popular day by day. One of the main reasons is the change in lifestyle. Numerous people are working long hours, shifts, or extended school days. They don’t have time to find ingredients or prepare good food. Women are now starting to work in the outside, and this can result in less time being available for preparing family meals. Another cause is the huge number of young, affluent people. The young people, who comprise over 75% of the population, have money to spend. A third reason is advertising. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a very modern, free-market country, with all forms of media such as the Internet and satellite television, and people like to try new products and different kinds of fast food. Again restaurants always try to release new dishes every season. More delicious and more unique will be favourite dish in that restaurant for making people curious about its dishes is one of purpose of restaurant. As we know, many restaurants are fast food; unhealthy. Nowadays, people are dynamic and curious everything that new release. They always seek for what the brand new comes from Advertisement.

However, this change in diet can have some serious effects one effect is on health. Many individuals in the UAE are becoming overweight. These people will be less productive and have conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Another result of fast food is the loss of the family tradition of eating together. Children and adults rarely eat together now, and thus get less opportunity to talk. Although fast food is not very expensive, it is more expensive than cooking properly for ourselves. Many of the fast-food companies are franchisees of foreign corporations, so profits leave the country.

Everyone should make a decision for maintaining a healthy diet. It keeps us physically, mentally, and emotionally fit. It also prevents us from having diseases that are very much common today. But unfortunately, with the sudden increase of fast food options and the changing lifestyle of the modern individual, people do not get to maintain a healthy diet. Since fast food restaurants are all around, people find it more convenient to order food, instead of cooking at home. Because of the modern person’s life, most people find it unavoidable to eat in fast food restaurants, therefore causing quite a number of negative effects. In conclusion, fast food, although it is convenient and a tasty addition to a diet, can have serious health and social effects. People should learn to choose fast food carefully and remember the pleasure of eating good food in good way of tradition.
