The discussion about the last lecture of current affairs was all about democracy. Democracy is one of the most important current issue all over the world. I am from democratic country. So being a citizen of democratic country I am highly appreciate to write a reflection dairy about democracy. The word “democracy” comes from two Greek words demos, meaning” the people” and kratein, meaning “to rule”. These two words are joined together to form democracy. Democracy is apolitical system in which the supreme power lies in the hand of citizens who can elect people to represent them.it also includes equality of all citizens, freedom and common rights and obligations. All these ideas present that the whole population of a given country is considered to be of an equal quality, capabilities and respectively must not be divided into groups of different treatment.
In general, democracy may be to types direct and representative. In direct democracy, people can take active part in law making and other government decisions. In representative democracy, representatives elected by the people who participate in law and decisions making. In present time many countries of the world are following democratic system. If we look into the word we can see that most of the European countries (the United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxemburg) are democratic. A king or queen is head of state while the constitution guarantees nevertheless all basic rights as in any democratic republic and sets clear limits to duties and competences of the monarch. Such a king can be regarded as a stabilizing factor rather than as a danger for a democracy.
Basically, modern political democratic system is very popular at present time because it has so many advantages. It gives us the freedom to do what we want to do, as long as we don’t influence upon others rights. For example, we can speak or think what we want; there are no boundaries to it. It gives freedom of speech, freedom to move anywhere in the country, freedom of thought and expression, and freedom to practice our religion. Another important advantage of democracy is that people gain a sense of participation in the process of choosing their government. They get the opportunity to voice their opinions. In democracy, the other parties can point out the ruling party’s mistakes in the session. It works on decision making as the government has to take the wisest decision for the country. Democracy also respects other views, thoughts, expressions, and religions. There are always free and fair elections held in democracy, which means you can elect anyone you want, as your representative.
On the other hand, Democracy also has some few disadvantages, like most of them. It takes a while to build a government, to get the election done, it takes time to decide. It also takes longer time in making laws. Not faster movement is in deciding things. A bad decision in choosing a ruler leads the country in a different direction. Free press and media can have a negative impact on the societies. However the main problem of democracy is that it leads to corruption and now it is the common phenomenon in every democratic country.
Democracy is not a government. It is a way of thinking, a responsibility. In a democracy there is no corruption in power because it is a transparent system. Democracy is overall good. In a democratic country the people have powers over the government, unlike the authoritarian government. Democratic countries have proven successful over the years. Democratic government is all about a leader’s success. It is all about competition. Above all, we can say that democracy is an outstanding topic of current affairs and it is such kind of political system in which all the citizens of a country have equal vote or voice in shaping policy of the country. That is why it has already achieved great popularity all over the world.
