In week 11, we have continued discussing about the other three parts of contemporary ethical issues. Those issues were regarding torture, humanitarian intervention, corruption, divorce and plagiarism. The lecture was given by Dr. Ahamad Faozy. For the first session, we have discussed about torture, humanitarian intervention and corruption.
To start with, torture is actually means inflicting severe physical pain and possibly injury on a person which is used as a punishment, revenge, political re-education, deterrence, interrogation or coercion of victim. Besides, torture also used by people to get information or to make the other people make confession regarding the issues that they want to know. Perhaps it may leads to death or injury even though it may or may not intend to kill or injure the victim.
Torture can be considered as immoral or unethical as it can be formed of murder. However, even though it is considered as immoral but it can be useful in some cases. For instance, some people used to torture the victim in order to get the information because people probably will confess due to scared of getting injured and being killed. In some countries, police used to do this to get the information and confession in order to protect the other’s human right.
Indeed, it has been prohibited in international law since 21st century which means that we should not be subjected to torture unless in some cases such as breaking some hard law and so forth. Humanitarian intervention is a unilateral intervention which comes from the human right violations in order to protect the people who are being subjected to torture or being denied their basic human rights by others. In fact, United Nation is one of the associations who do the human intervention which helps people to protect their human right from being abused or tortured by other people.
Indeed, the last topic that we have discussed during the first session was corruption. In philosophical, the ideological or moral discussion, corruption is spiritual or moral impurity or deviation from an ideal which may include many activities such as bribery and so forth. It probably occurs when an office holder or the other governmental employee acts in an official capacity for their own benefits. In my point of view, I think corruption is immoral and unethical as it creates many problems and has many negative effects towards people, society as well as to the country. As we can see, many countries are having a conflict and war because of political issues which actually comes from the corruption.
After discussing about those three issues, we were given a few minutes break. Then, we continued discussing about the rest of contemporary issues which are plagiarism and divorce. First thing first, plagiarism is when the students directly turning in work written by someone else, copying and pasting online sources for a research paper and failing to properly cite the ideas or thoughts of others. In fact, even though the students intentionally or unintentionally use the work of another without proper acknowledgement also can be called as plagiarism.
Plagiarism is considered as academic dishonesty and a breach of journalistic ethics. In my point of view, plagiarism is unethical even though it helps the students to saves the time and effort, improves results and shows considerable initiative on the part of the individual plagiarist. In fact, it is not good to plagiarize or copy-paste other’s opinion or ideas even with intention or without any intention to do so because it has many impacts towards others and individuals who commit plagiarism as well such as prevents them from learning, lack of respect towards others even to plagiarist themselves. Perhaps it might destroy their future when they are caught.
The last issues that we have discussed were divorce. In fact, divorce is considered as the final termination of marital union, cancelling the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage and dissolving the bonds of matrimony between parties. There are also some advantages of divorce which it helps couples to get the freedom when he or she frees from the households tension as they get their life back. In my opinion, divorce is not the best solution for couples who are having problems in their marriage because it will leads to the suffering of their children and many other problems. Once the couples decided to get married, they have to bear in their mind that the marriage is not for temporary but it is for the rest of their life. So, if they are not ready to take the responsibility as a husband or wife, they should not get married unless they are ready for that. In fact, according to my religion which is Islam, when we get married, it means that we have fulfilled half of our religion.
