Philosophy and ethical thinking in ancient Greece

In the fourth week lecture, we were discussing on philosophy and ethical thinking in ancient Greece. When i heard the word philosophy, what came to my mind were words playing. According to Wikipedia, philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind and language.

In the lecture, the teacher shared one quote says, “the only thing i truly know is that i know nothing” (Socrates). Socrates is one of the famous philosophers. He was a classical Greek Athenian philosopher. One of the students in the lecture theatre said that, that quote means that what you know now is not enough, every time you learn new things, you will realize that what you have is very little. I agree with this quote, there is no ending for knowledge, there is not word “enough” for learning.

We were also given a question; can we truly say that humanity has progressed? One of my friends said “yes”, humanity has progress. He said; before, people lived individually, they did not use to help others. The rich did not help the poor, but now it is different. Nowadays, people use to help each other. However, some students said “no”, because if we see carefully and think deeply it is just the opposite.

However, in my opinion, we can say that humanity has progressed in some part, for example in technology. It seems we are progressing in our ability to process information. However, humanity is regressing in terms of application of humanity itself. We are regressing in our ability to sustain concentration and our ability to appreciate something with depth.
