1. Overview of point Discussed
Our panel discussion was done on 10th June 2013 the first group of presentation. Our panel was about “The effect of technological innovation on environment”. We were discussed about recycling activities and how to reduce and what are steps we can do for reduce the harm. The main sectors we were focusing on air, land, water and sound pollution. I was a moderator at the time, and I had to talk about the general about the issues. Then I had to ask the questions to the panelists about how to reduce the issues.
2 The process
Talking about the process, it was hard to our group to find another person to join our group. We had already three members in our group, so we needed two more people to complete the roles of the panel discussion which was five panelists each group. Then after one week before presentation we did not have any panelists wanted to join our group and only three of us.
After forming a group we had difficulties to finding a topic for panel. I had written a proposal panel discussion and submitted at the time, but our topic had to rewrite again because we did not have any connection to civil society.
Finally, after I rewrite the proposal panel discussion we came out with the title the effect of technological innovation on environment.
3 The Implementation
At the beginning panel discussion I as moderator opening the panel and explained in general about the topics also explained about what is causing pollution in the earth. Before I asked questions to the panelists I told the things about the facts of pollution that has occurred on this earth.
The first section I told about the facts and the source of the pollution. Below is what I had discussed before I asked the question to the panelists: pollution created mostly by human action but also can be a result of nature disaster. There are four types of pollution we had discussed, which are Air pollution, Land Pollution, Water Pollution and Sound Pollution.
Talk about pollution. The first pollution that I mentioned was Air pollution. Air pollution is contamination into the atmosphere by chemical that can be harm to the air which is we consume every day. There are some of the main contributors to air pollution are:
Automobile emissions
Tobacco smoke
Combustion of coal
Acid rain
Noise pollution from cars and construction
Power plants
Manufacturing buildings
Large ships
Paint fumes
Aerosol sprays
Wildfires
Nuclear weapon
Then there are some facts of air pollution:
Nearly 2 million people die prematurely from illness attributable to indoor air pollution from household solid fuel use.
Nearly 50% of pneumonia deaths among children under five are due to particulate matter inhaled from indoor air pollution.
More than 1 million people a year die from chronic obstructive respiratory diseases (COPD) that develop due to exposure to such indoor air pollution.
Almost 232 million different types of vehicles are driven by U.S. citizens every day, adding greenhouse gases into the air
The second pollution was Sound pollution. Sound pollution is noise that we do not want or unwanted sound which is unpleasant effect to the ear. Usually the noise is produce by house hold around us. Some of the source that can be sound pollution such as vehicle on the road, jet plane, load speaker, Printing presses, industries, vehicles on road, aero planes contribute to noise pollutions in large cities.
There are the effect of the sound pollution can be effect to our hearing. Our hearing can damage to the eardrum by implosive load sound or by prolonged exposure to noise.
The third pollution was Land pollution. Land pollution is pollution of the Earth’s natural land surface by industrial, commercial, domestic and agricultural activities. There are some of the facts about the land pollution:
Every year one American produces over 3285 pounds of hazardous waste
Land pollution causes us to lose 24 billion tons of top soil every year
Americans generate 30 billion foam cups, 220 million tires and 1.8 billion disposable diapers every year
Over 80% of items in landfills can be recycled, but they’re not
These facts about the land pollution can be cause by:
Chemical and nuclear plants
Industrial factories
Oil refineries
Human sewage
Oil and antifreeze leaking from cars
Mining
Littering
Overcrowded landfills
Deforestation
Construction debris
The last pollution is water pollution. Water pollution is Water pollution is the introduction of chemical, biological and physical matter into large bodies of water that degrade the quality of life that lives in it and consumes it. Some of the facts about water pollution are:
Over two-thirds of U.S. estuaries and bays are severely degraded because of nitrogen and phosphorous pollution
Every year almost 25% of U.S. beaches are closed at least once because of water pollution
Over 73 different kinds of pesticides have been found in the groundwater that we eventually use to drink
1.2 trillion gallons of sewage, storm water and industrial waste are discharged into U.S. waters every year
40% of U.S. rivers are too polluted for aquatic life to survive
Americans use over 2.2 billion pounds of pesticides every year, which eventually washes into our rivers and lakes
Then the source of the land pollution is:
Factories
Refineries
Waste treatment facilities
Mining
Pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers
Human sewage
Oil spills
Failing septic systems
Soap from washing your car
Oil and antifreeze leaking from cars
Household chemicals
Animal waste
4. Learning/ Reflection of the panel discussion
From all the types of the pollution and we had discussed with our panelists. We came out some solution to reduce the pollution around us with recycling the thing that need or can be recycle, plant a tree to produce more oxygen, and other activities that can we do to reduce the pollution around us. Now I realize that the pollution nowadays can we find anywhere. Every time we can reduce the pollution with small act around us, for example recycling the thing like tin plate, bottle and another.
5. Conclusion
In conclusion, panel discussion are useful to us (me) , we always learn a lot and this time round I benefited a lot , it gave me courage to help our environment to reduce the pollution that can beneficial to our life.
