On week 6, the lecture was given by Miss Siti Noor Fauziah together with Mr. Hamid and the topic was about Islamic studies which we studied about the historical, changes and Islamic belief. Actually I felt impressed when I heard that there will be a lecture about Islamic studies. For this week, there is no tutorial due to the replacement class for those who are in ethics lecture A.
The word Islam is an Arabic word which means submission to the will of god and it is also known as the way of life. Besides, this word is actually comes from the same root as the Arabic word which is derived implies peace, safety and protection. Islam begins with the pre-islamic cultural & tribal context (جاهلية) which was the period of the darkest age in human history. Besides, it was a time of ignorance and anarchy in the religious and social life in the world. Jahiliyyah is marked by Polytheism, cultural practices and & tribal character. During the period of ignorance, there were many things that the people did which totally against Islam religion. For instance, adultery was common among the pre-Islamic Arabs. Step sons could marry their step-mothers and even the brothers sometimes married their own sisters. Men and women could have full liberty with their opposites. Human beings were sacrificed to propitiate gods. Fathers sometimes killed their children also for fear of poverty. The position of the women was very degrading in the Arab society. They were treated as chattels and with contempt. The birth of a female child was considered as a great curse and she was often buried alive by the heartless father.
Indeed, Islam has always been universal for all people and it can be proved by the fact that some of the early companions of the Prophet Muhammad were not only Arabs, but also Persians, Africans and so forth. In Islam, the most important truth that God revealed to mankind is that all human beings should submit to Allah Almighty God because there is nothing divine or worthy of being worshipped except for Allah. Indeed, all human beings or people who submit themselves to the will of Allah and worship Allah alone are called as a Muslims regardless of their race, nationality or ethnic background. In Islam, there is no Muslim that is superior than any other Muslim which can be proved by this hadeeth: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, or of a non-Arab over an Arab, or of a white man over a black man, or of a black man over a white man, except in terms of taqwa. The people are from Adam, and Adam is from dust.”- Narrated by al-Tirmidhi. It means that all Muslims are equal no matter how rich that person is. In fact, no one is superior to any others in Allah’s eyes except their Eman (faith) but only Allah can judge our Eman (faith), not us.
