Junk Food and Me – by Adnan Hasani

Better or worse, junk food is now globally available. We are surrounded by junk food almost everywhere, and commonly, you can find a lot of fast food restaurants. Past 2 weeks I was at McDonalds’ to have lunch there. Around 13.00, the queue of the people who were lined up waiting to order food was nearly till the exit door of McDonalds’. I have to admit that I got tired of waiting for my turn to order my favorite food, but it is still difficult for me to determine why I was so eager to eat the food at this fast food restaurant. Of course, junk food is also readily available at restaurant chains across the country. However, after 30 minutes waiting, I got the food and had my lunch there.

McDonald’s is the world’s largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurant. Initially, there are a lot of parties involved in such restaurants. In this case, all the customers who were eating there, including me and my friends, the workers, the franchise, and the government which has a significant role in such restaurants.

Is it really healthy? Of course junk foods are easily and made fast, but not only are most fast foods not terribly healthy, one study indicates that there may be something about fast food that actually encourages gorging. In the study, from the Children’s Hospital in Boston, teens age 13-17 were given three types of fast-food meals (all including chicken nuggets, French fries, and cola). In one meal, the teens were served a lot of food at once. In another, a lot of food was served at the same time, but in smaller portions. And in the third test meal, a lot of food was served, but in smaller portions over 15-minute intervals. Typically, the customer’s health is in danger, because eating fast food may promote overeating, because this type of food is low in fiber, high in palatability, high in fat and high in sugar in liquid form.

The ones who gain mostly from fast food restaurants, of course, they are the stake holders, the government benefits from the taxes, the workers, or simply saying economic profit. McDonalds’ was founded in 1940 in San Bernardino, California. It was founded by Richard and Maurice McDonald. In 1955, the founder Ray Kroc, joined the company as a franchise agent. A McDonald’s restaurant is operated by a franchisee, an affiliate, or the corporation itself. According to Wikipedia McDonalds’ fast food are served to 68 million customers daily in 119 countries. McDonald’s revenues grew 27 percent over the three years ending in 2007 to $22.8 billion, and 9 percent growth in operating income to $3.9 billion.

People are very attracted to fast food for several reasons. They like the taste of the food; they’re quickly prepared, easy to get, inexpensive, too busy to cook so and so on. On the other hand, there are serious consequences on health. Further, people will lose their traditional food, and the healthy food that they may prepare by themselves. I would suggest, in order to cope of being addicted to junk food, that we should not see eating as socializing, but see it as a basic need and a very important factor in our lives. Don’t by junk food from the shops, try to minimize eating very often at fast food restaurants, keep yourself busy so that you don’t want to think of going and having fast food.
