Going green

People nowadays are affected by different environmental problems. Some of the largest problems affecting the world are climate change, mammal extinction, over-fishing, pollution, ozone depletion, global warming to name just a few.

Who caused it? Human caused climate change and that is the greatest threat of this century. It also causes many difficulties for humanity. Today, climate change is occurring and negative consequences are beginning to emerge. The number of storms, floods, earthquakes, and heat waves has increased lately indicating a change in climate conditions.

With the urgent environmental problems, it is time to worry and act to save the earth. Humans need to have realistic actions and going green is essential. Today, going green is a burning topic and is paid attention by all people all over the world. It relates to every field and everyone on earth. To go green isn’t the effort of one individual or organization but the world as a whole. Why? Take for example, if a student decides that he/she is no longer using plastic bags for shopping, using paper bags instead, will that save the earth? If one organization, let’s say Albukhary International university bans smoking on its premises, will that save the earth? Yes these are ways of going green but a large number is required to make this effective.

Why go green? Going green not only helps save the environment but money as well to those that are more concerned about money. Take for example, minimizing the use of energy is important, for instance, switching off electrical appliances when they are not in use not only goes a long way in helping to save the earth but it would reduce bills. Another example of going green is driving properly. Driving faster uses up more gas meaning gas finishes at a faster rate thereby requiring a refill which in turn requires money. Besides, a car performs better and more efficient when driven gently. In addition, if someone really wants to help the environment, why not travel by bicycle or just walk especially if it is a short distance? No more paying expensive electricity bills, expensive fuel, no additional hydrocarbons in the atmosphere are released into the air. Now does that not sound like a win-win situation?

Sometimes it is really unnecessary to drive for example some lecturers in the university drive from the ICT building to the student centre that is about 100 meters away. Is that not a waste of fuel? Without even mentioning the larger problem at hand which is releasing hydrocarbons in the air? It is not just a waste a fuel, but a risk to the earth at large. People should start going green, everyone doing their part because we are only doing harm to humankind.

“Heal the world, make it a better place, for you and for me and the entire human race. There are people dying, if you care enough for the living, make a better place for you and for me.” Michael Jackson – (Heal the World.)
