DEMOCRACY OR DAMALCRACY

It was week seven of the second trimester. It was held at the lecture theater one. The lecture was about democracy. It was defined as to enlighten the world about their rights and freedom of speech. But on the contrary it is no more democracy but DAMALCRACY. DAMAL means to break something in my local language (Wolof). Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. Democracy allows eligible citizens to participate equally—either directly or through elected representatives—in the proposal, development, and creation of laws. It encompasses social, economic and cultural conditions that enable the free and equal practice of political self – determination.

Democracy has been change to damalcracy. The reason why damalcracy is that all the rules and the regulations which govern and guide democracy has been broken into pieces. Now all those rules are taken away because of the so called rulers of the world. The early days of democracy, the world was not like how it is today. People tend to fight for their rights because it is about to the taken away by their rulers. How was Libya in year of 2011, Syria, Mali and lots more just to name a few? Those countries have been turned into a rag. Just because of democracy. To my own perspective, people tend to claim for their rights and yet to know their rights.

However, presidents are no more fulfilling their promises. They do give out many promises when they are in need of the government and when the get into power they tend to “dema” or break all the promises. Though not all of us are made to the leaders but the chosen ones should always be an exemplary and the honest to their nations. They were elected by the population and they should bear in mind that if the population is not please in their ways of doing things they will protest in order to get back what belongs to them.

Furthermore, the population has to be very careful when chosen their leaders. They cannot choose one today and say no to him/her tomorrow. They should always make a right choice as the saying goes “make hay while the sun shines”. Democracy should not become damalcracy. Everyone should be responsible to their democracy but they should not misuse it as well. People should always know their responsibilities before claiming for their right.
