Democracy

Today’s the current affair’s lecture, we had a class with Dr. Hamid, he explained about democracy. Firstly, it’s a system of governance that consists of four elements which are monarchy, oligarchy, dictatorship, theocracy and democracy. I am from Thailand and the government in my country we still using democracy policy until.

Democracy is a form of government in which supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly. It allows all citizens to have equality in decision making that affects their lives. Democracy has its own basic elements. For example political system, active participation of the people, protection of human right of all citizens, and a rule of law which apply equally to all citizens. Democracy is a means for the people to choose their leaders and to hold their leaders accountable for their policies and their conduct in office.

The people decide who will represent them in parliament, and who will head the government at the national and local levels. They do so by choosing between competing parties in regular, free and fair elections. Government is based on the consent of the governed. In a democracy, the people are sovereign they are the highest form of political authority. Power flows from the people to the leaders of government, who hold power only temporarily. Laws and policies require majority support in parliament, but the rights of minorities are protected in various ways.

The people are free to criticize their elected leaders and representatives, and to observe how they conduct the business of government. Elected representatives at the national and local levels should listen to the people and respond to their needs and suggestions. Elections have to occur at regular intervals, as prescribed by law.

Those in power cannot extend their terms in office without asking for the consent of the people again in an election. For elections to be free and fair, they have to be administered by a neutral, fair, and professional body that treats all political parties and candidates equally. All parties and candidates must have the right to campaign freely, to present their proposals to the voters both directly and through the mass media. Voters must be able to vote in secret, free of intimidation and violence. Additionally, democracy is a result of modernity where modernity is a process resulting in a paradigm shift. For instance, what happened in Europe during the past four centuries? The expansion of waterways renaissance, French revolution ,progressive secularization of society and democracy as a result of modernity a process resulting in a paradigm shift “The world become smaller it means people can learn the different of culture” it’s said by Dr.Hamid.

Democracy in Thailand, Recent parliamentary elections in Thailand demonstrated the Thai people’s strong desire to consolidate stability and democracy in the Southeast Asian nation. With a strong voter turnout and peaceful balloting, the recent parliamentary elections in Thailand demonstrated the Thai people’s strong desire to consolidate stability and democracy in the Southeast Asian nation. The United States congratulates the people of the Kingdom of Thailand, our long-time friend and ally, for their participation in the elections.

Then the lecturer given the extra question for the student to answer in the reflection dairy to make more understanding in our own way as well. For the first question; what is wrong with today’s democracy? democracy as a political system of competition for power because nowadays people in Thailand and the government they are free to choose who will be the next president however, they didn’t think as a good chooser because people just follow another so it effects to their right without thinking. Moreover, Thai people they like to judge the people by listening from the other truly they might not know them well and they try to support the one who they like if that person are stranger for them so, might not chose by them then ,then like to have competition of choosing their leader it might create the corruption issue.

The second question; possible better alternative? Try to not follow another because you will miss their right as having democracy system is a good but you have to choose from your own view it’s will be better and try to accept other as well don’t judge the people from their cortex which they have out from their bodies lets them work or see the result which have done by them first before conclude that they are wrong also no more competition because the government is not kind of business.

Lastly, democracy is the politest form of government system in Thailand and Thailand’s neighbor like Malaysia also using this policy to lead their countries within people satisfy right of choice, practicing their own religions, choosing their leaders, having more independent and more advantages of democracy. However, recently, many countries are misusing democracy, conflicts and poverty and other issues.

To sum up democracy is a very good government system if we only have excellent ability to use it. in fact, in Thailand is not like that because whenever people get more chance to vote at the same time the problem will be there cause of non-satisfy of people in Thailand most of the time the government could not solve the issue which given by the people because of their comment is non-stop if they still stubborn as their behaviors now. For the last hours we got the extra knowledge from Hood Saleh who was explaining about ‘Orang Asli Studies ‘why and for whom? Because they also our friend who is living with us that we have to learn them more in the case of peaceful people, poor and our friend as I mention above.
